What is Balinese? Is ‘Balinese’ a reduction to form, ornamentation, materiality? Or is it more intangible and ephemeral, such as a sense of space, atmosphere, and other sensorial qualities? Architecturally and experientially breathtaking. I recently came back from a trip to Bali with my wife and stayed at @theudaya . The connection to nature, the details, and the experience throughout the entire journey from the reception to the front steps of our hotel room was an amazing immersive sensorial experience. The use of natural materials and non rectilinear forms with a mix of traditional building methods, created a sense of unity with nature, blending in the built environment with the natural. Honestly the best hotel experience I’ve had.

The urban landscape of Kuala Lumpur is fascinating - the contrast and interfaces between differing housing densities and building typologies create distinct interactions within the built environment. Created through a contrast in form and function (scale, typology, and adjacencies), along with proximity and integration with nature, it makes for a dynamic urban fabric.

How will Melbourne’s goal to fill in the ‘missing middle’ and become the townhouse capital look like? Returning from my trip to Malaysia, it was interesting to see another city’s architectural and urban response to this question of medium density.
Roof forms, facade treatments, and contrasting elements, shape Kuala Lumpur’s semi-detatched architectural vernacular of everyday buildings, both dwellings and commercial. Through its quantity, it has formed a particular identity within the urban landscape.
